Corio and TotalEnergies Sign the Project Certification Contract with Bureau Veritas and its Local Partner Korean Register for Ulsan Floating Offshore Wind Farm
• Corio and TotalEnergies join hands with Bureau Veritas, a world leader in testing, inspection and certification, and its local partner KR to obtain project certification for the floating offshore wind farm in Ulsan.
• Project certification seeks to ensure that the floating offshore wind turbine design, and the consequent specific supplied units are manufactured, transported, installed and operated in compliance with certain requirements and are suitable for the specific site conditions.
• “We will secure the reliability and stability of the floating offshore wind project in Ulsan to ensure that it can be built stably in line with international standards, and furthermore, contribute to strengthening the competitiveness of Korea’s offshore wind technology industry,” Corio and TotalEnergies said.
July 13, 2022 – Corio Generation(“Corio”),
Green Investment Group’s new specialist offshore wind business, and
TotalEnergies, a global multi-energy company, for the development of offshore
wind projects in Korea, announced on July 13 that they have contracted with Bureau
Veritas (BV), a world leader in testing, inspection and certification services,
and its local partner Korean Register (KR) to achieve project certification of
the Ulsan floating offshore wind farm.
Project
certification is the process of assessing the conformity of a product, system
or service with the requirements and characteristics outlined in a standard,
specification or regulation. These standards or specifications are published by
recognized international bodies such as ISO, IEC, etc. and serve to provide
proof that a product, system or service is safe and performs as promised. Unlike
the certification of specific systems, such as wind turbines and marine units,
certification is not a mandatory administrative requirement, but provides
higher credibility by guaranteeing consistency of design and construction in
the overall development of the floating offshore wind farm as well as the comprehensive
certification of the project.
This project
certification applies to the floating offshore wind project of the coast of
Ulsan. The projects were granted an electricity business license (EBL) by
February this year from the Electricity Regulatory Commission under the
Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and have begun the procedure for the
preparation of the projects. Corio and TotalEnergies, private developers of
this project, are developing a joint project for offshore wind farms with a
total capacity of more than 2 gigawatts in Ulsan City and South Jeolla Province
(Geomundo and Maenggoldo).
A Memorandum
of Understanding (MoU) between Bureau Veritas and Korean Register in March 2022
aimed at cooperation and relations to enhance competences and capacity by
sharing of technologies, information and experiences in the field of floating
offshore wind farms in the East Sea of Korea. It is expected that the MoU will help
improve the industry standard as well as ensure the stable design,
construction, and operation of the project by combining the expertise of KR for
various knowledge and experience in Korea with BV’s global network and
credibility in the testing and certification sector.
“We hope
that the project certification that we plan to acquire in cooperation with Bureau
Veritas and KR will help us carry out the floating offshore wind project in
line with domestic and international standards so that we can secure the
reliability and stability of the project, and furthermore, contribute to
strengthening the competitiveness of Korea’s offshore wind technology industry
by making the project as an example of best practice,” Corio and TotalEnergies
said.
“We are pleased to contribute through the project certification process to enabling floating offshore wind power to become a clean energy with reliability, stability, and growth potential,” KR said. “We will focus our capability on securing a competitive edge that will allow us to lead the global offshore wind power market by actively utilizing the expertise of both companies and thereby successfully carrying out the project certification process.”
